Latest Questionnaire Findings

(For the latest questionnaire finding from the Maths Makes Sense parent workshop click here)

Thank you for the extremely positive response to the 2015 Parent questionnaires. A total of 68 questionnaires were returned. The school has 263 pupils on roll with many families containing siblings therefore returning one form.

The School has a commitment – “continuous self-review and improvement”. With this in mind it means parental views are vital.  It is important to undertake an evaluation of our performance, acknowledging our successes and also recognise that there are things that we need to improve. Parental input is essential if the process is going to be truly meaningful and the evidence we collect helps to determine our priorities. However, if you are worried about anything or have a suggestion please do not wait until the next questionnaire but either send a message through the planner or come into school.

The following is the analysis of the results based on returns:

What do you think we do well as a school?

I fully agree with you, that teachers in the school teach really well and care about your children (99%). We have numerous lesson observations taking place and as you can see every year our results in the league tables in England for combined reading, writing and numeracy are either in line or above average nationally. A few of the positive comments that some parents made were:

  • Good and clear rules, outstanding teaching with love and care
  • My child enjoys school and is happy to approach anyone if she needs help or is troubled
  • I really like the reminders the school sends via texts.
  • The text messaging service is brilliant keeping us informed
  • I am very happy with my child’s progress and education
  • I am very pleased with school. The Staff are very helpful.
  • For educating my child so well - thank you.
  • Lovely school, great Staff
  • School is good in all aspects
  • My child loves coming to school. He likes his classmates and teachers too.

Thank you for those positive comments, the staff and myself really do care about the children here and we will do everything possible to ensure that they reach their full potential and they are happy and safe in school.

What we need to improve and how the school plans to address any suggestions:

  • A couple of parents have requested for a bigger variety of after school clubs especially for the younger pupils. Response - We will be putting together a list and suggestions of extra clubs. We will also ensure that the clubs carry on for longer.
  • One parent felt that there was not enough homework given out to their child. Response -  I completely agree that homework reinforces and consolidates pupil’s work and teachers the children to take responsibility. However I am also aware that there needs to be some space for childhood, for children to play outdoors, to have family time and it’s sometimes difficult to please all the parents. A modest amount of homework will be set and  the volume of homework will be reviewed regularly. Practising spellings and times tables, reading regularly or building projects with family members is also very beneficial. We will put on the website some revision sites that you may choose to look at if you have some spare time.
  • Some parents have commented that information can sometimes be given out a little late. E.g. The date for productions i.e. the Christmas Nativity, so parents can arrange time off work.  Response - We will endeavour to provide information to parents in a timely manner.
  • One parent had asked for the website to be updated more regularly. Response - We will ensure that this happens.
  • Some parents (13%) were not quite sure about the role of the Governors.

Response - There is some information on the website however this is a very quick summary and we will be giving you more information in the future.
Governing Body: Mr M. Quinn is our Chair of Governors. We are very lucky to have him on board because Mr Quinn was a Director of Education in Walsall. He is very knowledgeable with a wealth of experience. Our Governing Body consists of a body of twelve people who speak and act on behalf of the key groups in our school; the parents, the staff, the LA and the parish. These people, some who are appointed and some who are elected, meet regularly throughout the year to discuss matters relating to Curriculum, Finance, Staffing, Health and Safety, Ethos and Admissions. All Governors serve for three years. They work together for the good of the school, ensuring that decisions are in line with current legislation and expectations. They support the Head Teacher in monitoring, planning ahead, raising standards, budgetary control, prioritising needs and ensuring the smooth running of the school continues to cater well for the children of St Thomas of Canterbury. Each Governor also liaises with specific subject leaders in monitoring specific subjects – these are known as Link Governors and report back to the full Governing Body on their findings.

Please do not wait until we have another questionnaire for any contributions, comments or improvement you may like to suggest. Thank you once again for your continued support!

The table below summarises the responses that parents and carers made to each statement. The percentages column indicates the proportion of parents and carers giving ‘Strongly Agree’ and ‘Agree’ responses out of the total number of completed questionnaires.
